Forma in Warframe: what polarising does and where to get it
Forma is what separates a finished build from an almost-finished one. It changes a slot's polarity so the mods you want will fit, and charges you a full level reset for the privilege.
What Forma does
Every mod slot has a polarity, the symbol off to the side. When a mod's polarity matches the slot's, the mod costs half the capacity. Forma lets you put the polarity you need into a slot, or change one that is already there.
The process is called polarising, and it has a price: the item is reset to rank 0. Forma only goes onto gear already ranked to 30.
Capacity itself does not grow, only how efficiently it is spent. Doubling capacity is a different item, the potato, covered in its own guide.
It has side uses too: Forma is a component in some weapon and gear blueprints, it builds rooms in a clan Dojo, and it can be sacrificed for syndicate ranks.
Where Forma comes from
Blueprints drop in a lot of places, but they are not remotely equal:

If you need Forma specifically and quickly, Orokin Derelict Defense to rotation C is the farm: 22.56% is several times anything else on the list. Most of the time, though, Forma simply accumulates while you crack relics.
The Lua music puzzle guarantees one rare container, and rare containers are exactly where Forma hides.
Build or buy
A blueprint costs 35,000 credits plus one each of Morphics, Neurodes, Neural Sensors and an Orokin Cell, over 23 hours, rushable for 10 platinum.
Look at that arithmetic: three finished Forma cost 35 platinum in the market, under 12 each. One built Forma eats four rare resources and 35,000 credits. If you have any platinum at all, the three-pack usually wins, and blueprints are best spent when the rare resources are sitting idle anyway.
How to apply one
- Rank the item to 30 first, nothing else works.
- Arsenal, the item's mods, Action at the bottom, then Polarize.
- Pick the Forma type and the slot layout appears.
- Click a slot to cycle through polarities. A slot that already has one can be changed too.
Each Forma adds a star above the item's name, counted outward from the centre.
What to know before you press it
- The item resets to zero. You level it again from scratch.
- The potato stays. Forma does not touch a Reactor or Catalyst, so the doubled capacity comes back with the levels.
- Re-levelling pays no mastery. Those points were credited once. The exceptions are Necramechs, the Paracesis and adversary weapons, where levels past 30 pay for the first time.
- Warframe abilities may stay unlocked. How many survive the reset depends on your Mastery Rank: at MR 30 all four are available from the frame's third level.
- You can do it as many times as you like, you just have to reach 30 again each time.
Umbra Forma
The variant that applies the Umbra polarity. It exists for one purpose: cutting the drain of Umbra mods, the ones from Excalibur Umbra. It goes into Warframes and melee weapons only.
It is considerably harder to come by:
- Three at once for passing the Mastery Rank 30 test. That is the largest single source.
- A reward at certain Nightwave ranks, depending on the season.
- A blueprint in the Steel Path Honors shop for 150 Steel Essence, available once every eight weeks.
- One from Operational Supply for 20,000 standing during Operation: Plague Star.
Umbra Forma is not sold for platinum. You accumulate it, so spend it only on gear you genuinely run Umbra mods in.
Omni Forma, formerly Aura Forma
This is where a lot of older guides are out of date. Aura Forma was replaced by Omni Forma in Update 38.5 in March 2025, and the difference matters.
- Aura Forma made only the aura slot universal.
- Omni Forma makes any slot universal: it accepts a mod of any polarity except Umbra.
Where to get it: the market at 80 platinum each or 150 for three, as a Temporal Archimedea reward in the Höllvania Central Mall (7.09% in rotation B, 11.2% in rotation C), and from Nakak during Plague Star for 5,000 standing plus 10,000 credits, limit one.
Temporal Archimedea needs The Hex quest finished and rank 5 with that syndicate, so it is not a beginner's source.
How much Forma you actually need
Less than it looks. A fully polarised Warframe reaches 138 to 148 capacity against 60 with a potato alone, but very few builds need to go that far.
- Zero is fine for anything you use to clear the star chart.
- One or two usually solves «this mod will not fit» on a specific build.
- Five or more is for what you actually run in Steel Path and long endless missions.
And remember each Forma is another trip to rank 30. If you are going to do it, level the polarised item somewhere that drops something you want anyway.
